Bargerveen

In the municipality of Emmen lies a remarkable part of the Netherlands: the Bargerveen. A unique raised bog area, full of peace, space, and rare nature. Whether you enjoy hiking, cycling, or simply taking in the view: you’ll find it all here.

A living piece of peatland

Bargerveen is one of the last places in the Netherlands where active raised bogs can still be found. Once, it was part of the vast Boertangermoor. Today, the area consists of three distinctive parts:

  • The Amsterdamsche Veld

  • The Meerstalblok

  • The Schoonebeekerveld

Together, they form a fascinating landscape of peat pools, heathlands, rare plants, and birds you won’t find anywhere else.

Nature evolving

Since 1968, Bargerveen has been managed by Staatsbosbeheer. Thanks to smart interventions, nature is gradually restoring itself. As a result, you can now see remarkable species such as cotton grass, ling heather, and the European stonechat. A prime example of how nature bounces back.
